An archive
of over 4000 photographs from the wartime era when the
North West was a busy training & maintenance area,
including a large number of personnel collections of
memorabilia.
Histories of
the airfields in the North West and aircraft crash sites
are extensively covered. The museum specialises in the
Dominion, Polish & Czech aircrews who served in the RAF.
We have
several aero engines on display including RR Merlin,
Kestrel, Avon & Griffon. Bristol Hercules, Junkers Jumo,
and more.
Also many of
the items on display have been recovered by excavating
wreck sites including a display relating to the C4 "Time
Team" dig that was carried out on two A-26 Invaders
There are a
number of airframes and cockpits on display at the museum
including Vampires, Tornado, Whirlwind and Fleas
We have a
Home Front display complete with Anderson Shelter.
The Museum
also houses the National Collection of the Mountain Rescue
Survive
The museum
also houses a large military collection with a special
emphasis on the Cold Stream Guards, this also includes a
collection of wartime firearms.
An extensive
WW1 display is soon planned for the museum.
The Museum
also operates in partnership with the Lancashire Aircraft
Investigation Team, South Lancashire Aviation Research and
Peak District Air Accident Research, the collections of
these groups is now displayed at the Museum.
There are
currently five buildings plus outside display areas
housing the collection, each one packed with displays.
